Few experiences in life compare with walking uphill into scenic and historic Assisi, and the most beautiful way to do this is to walk through the Bosco di San Francesco, the park-like path that costs €3 for most people to walk but is free with your pilgrim credential.
After leaving Valfabbrica on the Via di Francesco, it’s all woods on a steady climb over the ridge. Come finally to the downhill and enjoy views first of the Rocca Maggiore above Assisi then the Basilica of San Francesco itself. Once you reach the bottom of the hill it’s easy to just walk up the auto road, but much better to walk the Bosco di San Francesco trail, given its carpet of flowers, benches with views of the valley, and unique entry nearly at the front door of the Basilica. Once there, a generous welcome awaits at the pilgrim office. Afterward walk through the amazing Upper and Lower Basilica’s of St Francis to marvel at the frescoes and to take a moment to contemplate the life of Italy’s humble and beloved Francesco.
The Valfabbrica to Assisi walk is the final stage of our Florence to Assisi group trek, and we’re offering two departures on this itinerary in 2024. They are two of our five group treks on the Via di Francesco in 2024. We hope you’ll join us!
