The long and beautiful stage between Pieve Santo Stefano and Sansepolcro includes two beloved sanctuaries – Cerbaiolo and Montecasale – each with a monk or three in residence and each with fantastic views over the green peaks of the Apennine Mountains which stand before the lush flatlands of the Upper Tiber River Valley. It’s hard not to keep the camera in hand all the time, since a view to the south is almost certain to pop out at any time. Hidden below Montecasale is the Sacro Specco, an open cave with its own seasonal waterfall burbling to one side. The day ends at Sansepolcro, one of Tuscany’s mountain towns that retains its medieval character and charm. Here one of Italy’s most revered Renaissance masterpieces is on display, the 1463 Resurrection by Piero della Francesca.
