Overview

From the Sacred Valley to Assisi: Walking in the Footsteps of St. Francis

Walk in the footsteps of St. Francis through the heart of Italy, from the sacred places of the Rieti Valley to the hilltop city of Assisi. This northbound pilgrimage begins with a visit to Greccio, where Francis celebrated the living Nativity in 1223, and follows a landscape of wooded ridges, quiet valleys, medieval towns, and centuries-old sanctuaries.

In Poggio Bustone, Francis found consolation and a renewed sense of calling. Beyond the peaceful shores of Lake Piediluco, our route enters the dramatic Nera Valley before climbing toward magnificent Spoleto, one of Umbria's great historic cities. From there, the path turns toward the gentler, olive-covered slopes of the Valle Umbra, passing through the villages of Poreta and Trevi and the flower-filled streets of Spello.

Our final day's walk is a fitting culmination. Leaving Spello, we'll follow a challenging high route across the slopes of Monte Subasio, with extraordinary views over the Umbrian countryside. Ahead lies Assisi, where the Basilica of San Francesco welcomes pilgrims to the resting place of the saint whose remarkable life has inspired this journey.

Across nine walking days, we'll encounter landscapes that have changed surprisingly little over the centuries, along with Roman ruins, medieval churches, Renaissance art, and the living traditions of rural Umbria. Our small guided group, welcoming accommodations, and luggage transportation allow us to travel with lighter packs and enjoy the pleasures of walking, discovery, and companionship.

This pilgrimage is an invitation to experience the world at walking pace, discovering not only the places associated with Francis but something of the simplicity, wonder, and peace that shaped his extraordinary vision.
